Orange County Events This January Have Beauty And Culture

You may have started this new year thinking that you wanted to spend some more time taking part in Orange County events. If your resolution is to get out and get involved in the community, there are lots of opportunities for you to do so. In this January edition of OC events, we’ve got some museum exhibits you should enjoy, and more.

Discovery Cube Presents: Planetary Research Center

The Discovery Cube in Santa Ana is a place where children and adults both enjoy learning about all kinds of natural wonders, and this January you can take your little ones there to check out the Planetary Research Station. It’s an animated globe that can be used to show dynamic animated images of the surfaces of planets, ocean depths, and the atmosphere. Different shows are debuting there all the time, so you never know what to expect. The Discovery Cube website can tell you what is playing there this month.

Bowers Museum Presents: African Twilight: Vanishing Rituals and Ceremonies

At the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana this January, running through the 6th of the month, you can find out about African history as you peruse film and pictures documenting 15 years of research and interaction from 45 African countries. The vast cultural diversity of the continent is on full display, but the similarities of the human life cycle are also much in evidence. You’ll see unique and fascinating initiation ceremonies where juveniles join the adult ranks, intimate healing practices for the dead and living, and also colorful courtship rituals. This exhibit is in its final week, so be sure not to miss it.

SCR Presents: Culture Clash (Still) In America

Recommended for those high school age and over, this is one of the more provocative Orange County events you are likely to encounter. Running through January 20th, the South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa presents social satire that is saucy and thought-provoking. This is satire at its most poignant, as public figures and proverbial sacred cows will be poked, prodded, and dissected. The Repertory is playful, but they also have axes to grind.

That’s it for January in the OC. Enjoy, and don’t forget to visit blog sponsors Toyota of Orange, one of the finest car dealerships near Santa Ana.
