There are lots of fun things to do in Orange County in December, but what if you’ve spent all your money on holiday presents? You still need some choices for getting the kids or yourself out of the house. In this article, we’ll talk about some of the best options that are free to the public.

The Old Courthouse Museum

If you’re a history buff, you’ll want to stop by the Old Courthouse Museum in Santa Ana. Open year-round, this is the oldest courthouse in Southern California, as it traces its roots back to 1901. Inside you will find the Orange County Historical Center, the library of the Pacific Coast Archeological Society, and the Orange County Archives. If you have a history in Orange County, you can look up word of your family’s doings, and all of these features are free to visit. The lawn of this sandstone-and-granite building is also the perfect place for a picnic.

Visit Dana Point Harbor

If you want to get some air and exercise, you can tour the pier at Dana Point Harbor. You’ll find tall ships there as well as smaller watercraft, and during this month many of them are decorated for the holidays. The IlluminOcean event is taking place at the moment, and if you come in the evenings, the warm glowing lights and the gentle breeze off the water are enchanting. This is an ideal spot to perambulate with the family or go on a date night with that special someone.

Be There For Mass at Mission San Juan Capistrano

Mission San Juan Capistrano first opened its doors in 1775, and while there is a fee to visit this historical site, you can still go to Sunday mass at the Mission Basilica for free. There is also a lovely prayer room that is dedicated to Saint Peregrine, who is the patron saint for those living with cancer. It is free during scheduled mass times. Regardless of whether or not you’re a devout person, this site is a beautiful place with a long, rich history, and you’ll feel a sense of peace and contentment there.
